Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your purchase! You should have received a confirmation email with your ticket details, including the studio address. If you haven't received it, please check your spam folder or contact us at info@bightbound.com.

We require that all participants: 1) be at least 18 years old and 2) have completed the registration process on bightbound.com/account/register which includes providing an image of a valid photo ID to attend any event. We ask that ticket purchasers communicate these requirements to their partners in advance and complete the registration process before attending your first event.

Unfortunately, our ticketing system does not allow us to automatically link your ticket purchase to your account, so you won't automatically see your ticket details on our website. Please check your ticket confirmation email for any event-specific information.

We teach out of our home in a residential neighborhood. Feel free to park anywhere on the street. We hang a sign on the front door so you know you have the right house. Unless it's very wet out, we usually ask people to leave their shoes on the front porch before coming inside. The door should be unlocked – just come on in!

The studio features foam puzzle mats covering the floor, a modular hardpoint system for more advanced rope work, and an eclectic mix of furniture and floor cushions for seating. We always provide an assortment of light snacks and water.

Classes and life drawing events are capped at 10 people. Please try to arrive a few minutes early so we can start on time.

Social events like labs, jams, and parties are usually larger and less structured. You can arrive at any time during the event. Please wear vanilla clothes to the door (we have a nice large bathroom you can change in once you arrive), and keep your outside conversations PG-13 – we would like to maintain a good relationship with the neighbors.

We look forward to having you!

Austin has a vibrant rope community with many types of events. We personally recommend the following groups:

Austin Rope Slingers is a volunteer-run peer-based rope education and social group. They run casual rope labs every Monday night, and host the occasional party.

Rope Bottoms of Austin (BOA) is a group specifically for people who like being tied up ("bottoming" for rope). They have regular meetups and maintain numerous resources for folx on the receiving end of the rope.

While there is no substitute for learning hands-on and in-person from experienced practitioners, here are a few online resources we can recommend for further study:

Yes! We offer private instruction tailored to your specific interests and skill level. Private sessions are ideal for learning at your own pace, working on specific techniques or ties, addressing unique physical considerations, or exploring more advanced topics in a comfortable and private environment. They're also great for couples wanting personalized attention or groups wanting a custom curriculum.

Rates vary depending on number of instructors, length of class, and group size. For couples, we usually recommend one instructor, with costs starting at $150 for 2 hours of instruction. For small groups up to 10 people, requiring two instructors, costs start at $200 for 2 hours. contact us to discuss opportunities and scheduling.

Thanks for your interest! We would love to discuss what your needs are, and encourage you to contact us to start the conversation.

We are more likely to be able to accommodate your request if you give us good advance notice and offer to compensate us for our time and travel, as applicable. That said, we highly value accessibility and encourage you to reach out regardless of your circumstances or ability to compensate us financially.

Fundamentally, "rope bondage" is the consensual use of rope or rope-like materials to bind the human body, often to achieve some purpose (e.g., restraint, aesthetics, hot sex, physical challenge, intimacy, meditation, play, etc.). There are as many kinds of rope bondage as there are people who practice it.

We practice and teach a modern fusion of rope bondage styles that is heavily inspired by Japanese "Kinbaku," frequently called "Shibari" in the West. We generally avoid Japanese terminology to refer to our ties and practice, because we find those terms are often misused and can border on cultural appropriation. We are influenced by many incredible people, including but not limited to: GentLeeBrutal, Fuoco, Samjay and Gigi, Barkas, Addie Tahl, and Ropunawa.

We like to focus on a mix of fundamental technique (including "why" and not just "what") and applications for play. We do rope for the interactions and connections that it fosters between people, to explore a range of experiences and emotions with each other, and because we think it's hot. If you're looking for purely technical or artistic bondage instruction, you may want to look elsewhere.

Anyone can do rope! There are endless variations on every tie and technique, and we are always happy to troubleshoot and find alternatives that work for you. Where there's a will, there is always a way.

While we seek to be as accessible as possible, we are necessarily limited by the constraints of our studio and are not fully ADA accessible. There is one small step outside the studio. There are no steps inside, but there are some variations in flooring. If you have any questions about your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Rope bondage in general does not necessarily require a partner. That said, our style and education is very much targeted at tying pairs, so while it's possible to attend our classes solo we highly recommend bringing a friend or partner. We try to be explicit in our event descriptions about whether the content of any given class is accessible to self-tiers or not.

Anything you're comfortable in is perfectly fine! For classes, many people opt for comfortable yoga or workout-type clothing that fits close to the body and doesn't restrict movement. For non-educational events like labs, jams, or parties, people will wear anything from pajamas to lingerie to dresses to full-on formal-wear. You do you!

All you need to do bondage is some rope and a cutting tool in case of emergencies! For cutting tools, we recommend a cheap pair of EMT shears (sometimes also called bandage or trauma shears). These can be bought online, at most pharmacies, and at our studio.

The amount of rope you need for a given situation can vary wildly. Most of our classes will specify how much rope you need. When in doubt: bring at least 4 full-length ropes for floor rope-based classes, and at least 8 full-length ropes for suspension classes.

Loaner rope is available for our beginner classes.

Honestly, when you're first starting out, we recommend getting some cheap cotton rope, either 6mm or ¼", from a hardware or craft store, and cutting it into pieces that are about 25-30ft long. This is usually a better option than "bondage rope" sold at sex stores, which is pretty but often degrades quickly when actually used.

Once you're hooked, you can start exploring other rope options. We have a lot of samples of different types of rope at the studio, and are happy to let you feel them and talk to you about their pros and cons.

If jute is what you want, we've got you covered! Bightbound sells Koumanawa jute in 5mm, 5.5mm, and 6mm diameters. We stock 8m lengths, but can accommodate custom lengths upon request.

We also sell POSH, a synthetic that looks and acts more like a natural fiber rope, which we recommend as a safer alternative for uplines.
